The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of every student at Lister Community School is recognised as being of fundamental importance for their education by governors, staff and parents of the school. This is delivered through all subjects of the curriculum, including Religious Education (RE) and Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE).
Our PSHE(Click here to open the PSHE Curriculum Overview) and SMSC (Click here to open the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development Overview) provision plays an essential role in equipping our learners with the knowledge, attitude and skills to stay healthy both physically and mentally; to become imaginative and informed thinkers about contemporary experiences and world affairs; and to support our learners to become confident, resilient and skilled young adults preparing learners for life after Lister.
With its multifaceted approach, our current model enables PSHE & SMSC to be incorporated in all aspects of our Lister Learner’s school life underpinning our provisions of pastoral care. There are 7 different mediums through which the PSHE & SMSC curriculum is delivered:
- embedded throughout subject curriculum areas
- as part of our subject specialism in years 7, 8 and 9
- super learning day workshop sessions
- drop-down workshop sessions
- 20 minute weekly sessions with tutors exploring ‘Thought for the Week’
- visits from external guest speakers and specialist facilitators
- themed events such as Black History Month
The provisions are further complemented by the introduction of the Lister Character Awards which sees learners recognised and rewarded for demonstrating key citizenship qualities and skills through participation in a comprehensive list of enrichment opportunities.
We have specifically selected key content which aims to meet the needs of our individuals, as well as the local community, the British nation as a whole and aspects of global citizenship. The subject material covered is constantly reviewed through consultations with governors, parents and guardians, teachers, tutors as well as our learners themselves who play a key role in shaping the content delivered. This feedback is regularly acted upon to ensure content is relevant and evolved to tackle changing social and individual pressures.
The aim is that all pupils will develop a positive attitude towards themselves and others, show respect for the world in which they live and also deal with everyday life experiences in a confident and understanding way.
