~~~~Latest Update~~~~
Dear Parents
Excellent news! The school will be open to years 7-9 on Wednesday, 17th October 08.25 – 12.30 and to ALL students on Thursday, 18th October and Friday, 19th October 08.25 – 15.00. The provision for years 10 and 11 planned for Monday, 15th October through to Wednesday, 17th October at Newham Collegiate School (NCS) and NewVic will continue as planned at these sites.
As you are aware we would very much like to have avoided closing if we could, but following consultation with the Local Authority and with Newham Pest Control the closure was unavoidable. We have worked very closely with all involved to speed up the process as far as possible. The contractors and our cleaning staff are currently working extremely hard to have the school reopened for our students and I am pleased to say that we believe we can reopen on Wednesday 17th October. As the kitchen will not be fully available for use on Wednesday, we will be unable to provide meals on that day therefore the school day will finish at 12.30pm for years 7-9.
Please click on this link for a more detailed plan for the provision for next week: Week Beginning 15th October
Learning During School Closure
We expect all students to complete independent learning for all their subjects during this period of school closure.
These linked documents provide a summary of the learning that has been set by subject teachers. Students should work their way through the work set for the subjects they take. Students may contact their teachers via their school email accounts if they have any questions.
Please note: these documents will be updated regularly by teachers so if there are any tasks missing or if students complete tasks early, they should check back daily to see what else has been set.
Dear parents
I am writing to update you on the situation in relation to our school closure. As I write Newham Pest Control is beginning the work for a thorough fumigation of the school.
At Lister we take the education and the safety of our students very seriously, and I was very reluctant to close the school. You may have heard that some other schools have stayed open, even some which have found spiders of the same type; the key factor in our decision to close was that Pest Control found significant numbers of the spiders and their eggs in a number of locations around the school site, both outside and inside the building. We have explored whether it would be possible either to fumigate only part of the building at one time, or to carry out the work more quickly, but at present it does not appear likely that we will be able to have use of the building again before the half-term holiday.
In these unforeseen circumstances, we are very grateful to two local colleges, New Vic and Newham Collegiate (NCS), which have offered the use of their facilities. We have therefore been able to schedule use of classrooms at Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre for all our Yr 11s from Monday onwards (meeting at Newham Collegiate, 326 Barking Road, E6 2BB, at 1.20pm), and we are exploring the possibility of running at least some classes for Yr 10s during the period that the main school site is shut. Please check our website for the most up to date information.
We are of course also setting work for all students to complete during the school closure and full information on this is available on our website. Please ensure your child accesses this and that they are studying at home (or in one of the borough’s excellent libraries) every day of the closure. We expect to be able to make some additional provision available for at least a significant number of our students, and will be updating the website on Monday.
As I stated in earlier updates, this has been a very difficult decision to take, and I fully appreciate the difficulty for some families of an unplanned closure. We have however taken the decision after extensive consultation with the experts; unfortunately, the extent of the infestation makes it necessary to deal with it as thoroughly and quickly as possible.
Yours sincerely
Dear Parent/Carer
UPDATE – SCHOOL CLOSURE
We have had to make the very difficult decision to close the school following confirmation that there is a False Widow spider infestation at our school. No one could have predicted that we would be closed in these circumstances, but we have now had clear advice that there is a significant presence of the spiders. Due to the intensive fumigation process that is now needed, the school is likely to remain closed until the October half term break. Unless you are advised otherwise, the main school site will re-open after the half term holiday on Monday 29th October 2018, but we are exploring whether any alternative sites can be used for some groups of students over the next two weeks.
I should like to emphasise that (a) the spiders are unlikely to bite, and (b) if they do bite, it is usually of the level of severity of a wasp-bite. However, we must consider that in our large school population there may be some individuals with medical conditions who could react more severely. The problem has to be dealt with, and after careful consultation, we have concluded that it is best that it is done thoroughly and immediately.
We are very sorry for the loss of time in school. Teachers are currently working to prepare programmes of work for all year groups; please check the school website for updates. While the school site is closed, we expect students to complete work set for them, and staff will be marking work and sending back comments and advice. We will also be adding to the website advice on extended reading for our students and we hope that all families will support and encourage their children to take the opportunity to read widely during this period.
We are also aware that an unplanned closure presents significant difficulties for families; if you have concerns about being able to make appropriate arrangements for your child during this period, i.e. if they are not able to stay in a safe place during the day, please email childprotection@lister.newham.sch.uk and we will contact you to discuss what alternative arrangements could be made.
Yours faithfully
